Greek party leaders divided over coalition gov't talks failure, bailout deals

Greek pro and against bailout party leaders were left divided Tuesday over the failure to forge an agreement for a coalition government to rule the debt-wrecked country, which opened the way for new national elections in June, according to Xinhua.	The latest opinion surveys show that a fragmented parliament divided between supporters and critics of bailout deals with international lenders will emerge as well after the new polls, fuelling anxiety over whether Greece will avoid prolonged political instability and implement a clear economic policy to tackle the risk of default and an exit from the eurozone.	At the end of the final round of consultations at the presidential mansion in Athens on Tuesday afternoon, it was officially announced that the efforts to form a national unity government to end the political deadlock after the May 6 general elections ended fruitless.	Greek President Karolos Papoulias will chair a new meeting of party chiefs Wednesday on the appointment of a caretaker administration to lead Greece to new elections.	If they fail to agree on an interim prime minister, in accordance with the constitution, the president will appoint the head of the Supreme Court, the Supreme Administrative Court or Court of Audits to lead the country to the ballots expected by mid-June.	By Tuesday evening, all party leaders who had participated in the consultations were exchanging blame over the breakdown, calling on voters to support them in the second round of the electoral battle.	Antonis Samaras, head of the conservative New Democracy (ND) party that topped the May 6 elections with some 19 percent of votes, stressed in statements to the press that "a strong pro-European front will fight the leftist, populist forces."	Speaking from the headquarters of the socialist PASOK party that ranked third, its leader Evangelos Venizelos talked about "some parties that put party politics above the national interest."	Alexis Tsipras, leader of the radical left coalition SYRIZA that ranked second in the May 6 polls boosted by voters` anger at harsh austerity imposed under the bailout deals over the past two years, accused the two mainstream parties of promoting an economic pro-bailout policy that "would leave Greece hopeless."	He claimed that the review of the two bailout agreements signed with the European Union (EU) and International Monetary Fund (IMF) creditors since May 2010, envisaged by ND and PASOK, is not bold enough to make a real change for the recession-hit suffering Greeks, pushing for annulments of certain terms.	The smaller Democratic Left party that had joined Tuesday`s talks, as a possible partner in a wide coalition, repeated its support for any coalition that would safeguard Greece`s eurozone membership and seek better lending conditions.	The nationalist Independent Greeks party and the Greek Communist Party in the meantime made harsh attacks against the bailout agreements.	As EU/IMF creditors have warned that they could stop the flow of vital bailout aid to Greece if Athens backtracked from previous pledges, the latest opinion polls suggested that SYRIZA would win the new elections, with no party securing again an absolute parliamentary majority, leading to a new round of talks to form a coalition government in June.	According to the survey printed on Eleftheros Typos (Free Press) daily, SYRIZA could garner some 20.5 percent of the votes up from 17 percent in the May 6 polls, and ND would follow with 19.4 percent.	The poll reaffirmed previous surveys showing that an overwhelming majority of Greek people (81.4 percent) want Greece to remain part of the European common currency zone.

Treatment of Yulia Tymoshenko stopped over disclosure of confidential medical information

Dr. Harms of the Charité clinic in Berlin says they have been forced to suspend Yulia Tymoshenko’s treatment in connection with the unsanctioned disclosure of confidential medical information, according to the Official web site of Yulia Tymoshenko.
“The problem became more problematic today, after in recent days, specifically yesterday, the confidential treatment plan `surfaced` in the press. This is a situation that you couldn’t imagine in most countries. And so the trust that we had with Mrs. Tymoshenko has decreased significantly. Overall, a situation has emerged in which we need to review if further treatment makes sense,” said Dr. Harms.
According to him, Yulia Tymoshenko has ended her hunger strike. “There is progress regarding food. On the other hand, given the circumstances, including the constant surveillance, treatment has become problematic. It’s quite difficult to build doctor-patient relations if you can’t be one-on-one with a patient,” said the doctor.
Dr. Harms warned that the suspension of treatment could cause Yulia Tymoshenko’s conditions to worsen. “Today she refused the procedures and we’re consulting on further treatment. This means that a situation has arisen and we’ll figure this out in the process of further consultations. Therapy makes sense only if the patient is relaxed. When there are always cameras directed at her and you never know who’s behind the monitor, when you’re not alone in a room – this clearly isn’t a situation in which you can relax,” he added.
The physician said that another doctor from the Charité clinic will soon be supervising Yulia Tymoshenko’s treatment. “This was planned form the beginning. No doctor at Charité can leave for several weeks, so we have a rotation,” he explained.
The German doctor also refuted claims by representatives of the prison service that Yulia Tymoshenko’s associates are putting pressure on him. “I heard that on the radio they said I am giving in to pressure from members of Tymoshenko’s party. The word ‘terrorized’ was used. I never said this. If this was spread, then it’s a complete lie,” said Dr. Harms.

The converted centre-half is buoyed by the fact that even though his compatriot `plays a different sport` to everyone else, he remains a very humble individual, according to Goal.com.	The Argentine struck four times in Saturday night`s Liga victory over Espanyol at Camp Nou to take his tally in all competitions this season to a staggering 72.	Mascherano, though, believes that the truly remarkable thing about his countryman that he has now allowed his success to go to his head.	"I even asked if he knew he had scored 72 goals in a season," the former Liverpool man is quoted as saying by Mundo Deportivo.	"Although he may not be human, it`s good that Messi still thinks he is. Messi plays another sport."	The game against Espanyol was also significant for the fact that it was Pep Guardiola`s final home game as boss and the club paid tribute to the outgoing coach in a special ceremony just after the full-time whistle.	Mascherano, for his part, was delighted that Guardiola was given such a fine send-off as he remains incredibly grateful for the way in which he has converted him into a top-class centre-half after arriving in Catalunya in 2010 from Anfield as a defensive midfielder.	"Pep is a man of this house and feel the club`s colors more than anyone," he explained. "So, the farewell was well deserved.	"There is a `before` and an `after Guardiola` in terms of my career. He has converted me into the kind of player that I could never have imagined becoming.	"In 20 or 30 years, they will talk of the Barca of Messi or Pep, and that`s the nicest thing, more so than any the title."	Guardiola has led the Blaugrana to 13 title since taking charge in 2008 and could yet add a 14th, with a Copa del Rey final to come against Athletic Bilbao on May 25.

Yulia Tymoshenko’s daughter says she is confident her mother will soon be free after being illegally imprisoned, according to the Official web site of Yulia Tymoshenko.
"Mum, we’re not with you right now, but I have faith that you will soon be free and together with us," Eugenia Tymoshenko said while speaking today at the Forum of the United Opposition, where she read her mother’s letter to the meeting participants.
Eugenia Tymoshenko once again thanked the leaders of EU countries, politicians and international organizations for their support and solidarity.
Today the Forum of the United Opposition, which was held on St. Michael’s Square in Kyiv, adopted a resolution and joint campaign program for the elections to the Verkhovna Rada that will be held on October 28, 2012.
"The basis for our unity is the common belief in the national interests of Ukraine, rights and freedoms of every citizen, European democratic values and convictions, the fact that this regime can no longer rule the country. Our main goals are a just state, honest government, dignified life and European choice," said the resolution.
The united opposition established as its goal the removal of Yanukovych’s regime from power, the formation of a democratic majority in parliament and the return of Ukraine to a European course of development. "We will stop the political repressions - Yulia Tymoshenko, Yuriy Lutsenko and other political prisoners will be freed," the document states.

Lithuania President Dalia Grybauskaite says Ukraine’s European perspective will depend on the resolution of the case of Yulia Tymoshenko and other political prisoners, according to the Official web site of Yulia Tymoshenko. "Due to delayed reforms, especially in the sphere of human rights, Ukraine`s European perspective is becoming increasingly vague. Therefore, unambiguous and rapid decisions on the part of Ukraine are needed for maintaining further cooperation and mutual confidence. Legal reform, discarding the relics of post-Soviet repressive law, is a key priority," Dalia Grybauskaite said today following her visit with Yulia Tymoshenko in the Kharkiv hospital.	She said that Europe’s trust in Ukraine is diminishing. "The possibilities to rectify the complicated situation exist, but it is up to the Ukrainian people to decide whether to use or not these possibilities and whether to choose the path towards getting closer to Europe or the way of self-isolation," she underlined.	Dalia Grybauskaite said that the decision of the Ukrainian government to move Yulia Tymoshenko to a hospital where she will be under the care of German doctors is a positive sign, but that it is only the first step on the path towards European values. "Respect for human rights, the rule of law and democratic values is a major precondition for the European integration of Ukraine," she said.	The president of Lithuanian emphasized that Ukraine`s European perspective will depend on such factors as ensuring for Yulia Tymoshenko the right to adequate medical treatment, behavior with imprisoned opposition leaders, respect for human rights, and implementation of internal reforms.
